Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a primary health care practice that has flourished in China for at least 3,000 years and is widely performed in Asia and Europe. It is considered to be one of the newest primary health care professions in this country.
Acupuncture has grown in popularity due to increased public experience and use by both western and oriental physicians who have integrated acupuncture into their health care. The benefits are widespread.
Far more that a technique of inserting tiny threadlike needles along meridian lines of the body, acupuncture treats a person as a whole, not just by isolated symptoms. It involves a complex system of diagnosis and related treatments, and is based on the "pattern of disharmony".
Modern acupuncture utilizes other methods as well, such as herbal medicine, moxibustion, exercise, and nutrition. Acupuncture treats to strengthen the physical condition, prevent disease, control pain, and achieve longevity. The goal, as practiced in Oriental medicine, is not necessarily to eliminate or alleviate symptoms, but to increase the ability to function and improve the quality of life.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture is a therapy that uses the application of needles and pressure to specific points on the body. These are grouped along specific pathways or meridians that cross the body. As long as energy flows freely through these pathways, health is maintained. When the flow of energy is blocked, health is disrupted and results in pain and illness. By stimulating the appropriate acupuncture points along these meridians, energy is realized and health is restored.
Studies indicate that acupuncture influences the central and peripheral nervous system. It is particularly effective in pain control and affects sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in the blood, as well as the endocrine and gastrointestinal systems. Acupuncture works with the body to harmonize and balance energy. It improves circulation, releases endorphins to control pain, and allows the body to heal itself quickly and completely.
Is acupuncture Safe?
One of the great advantages of acupuncture is the absence of serious side effects. Needles generally cause no bleeding on entry or removal and are disposable. There is minimal risk of organ or blood vessel penetration.
What Should You Expect During Treatment?
Most patients find the treatment very relaxing, which brings on a feeling of well-being. Most are surprised at how easy the needles are placed. The tiny thin needles are designed to be virtually painless. A patient may feel a slight sensations upon entry and then pressure or a "dull" or "surging" reaction when the needle reaches the "chi" or correct point.
Acupuncture Treatments
The number of treatments will depend on your condition and could vary from two to twelve sessions, depending on whether your symptoms are chronic or acute and on you general physical vitality.
Acupuncture treatments may also include a variety of non-needle techniques, such as heat (called Moxibustion), acupressure, and nutritional supplements. Oriental herbal prescriptions providing essential nutrients (with tremendous healing and rebuilding potential) may also be prescribed.

What is Oriental Medicine?
Oriental herbal medicine is a traditional science based upon Oriental philosophy. The discovery of effective herbal medicine was made while treating diseases and natural ailments over thousands of years of practice, experiences, and realizations.
Individual herbs have different properties, such as taste and temperature. Select herbs also enter different organs in the body. The mutual harmony of combining these herbs can increase a treatment's effectiveness and reduce side effects. A typical prescription or formula may consist of 4-15 different herbs or more.
After a diagnosis is made, herbs are selected and combined, or a traditional formula is prescribed. The formula is adjusted to meet the needs of a patient's symptoms and diagnosis.
The formula brings out the treatment effect by regulating Qi (energy), blood, and body fluids that are the fundamental substances that form the body.
Since Oriental medicine is also based upon Yin-Yang and Five Element Theory, when it is used in conjunction with acupuncture, it gives total harmony and balance to the whole body.
